Suppressors & NFA FAQ
Are suppressors legal in Utah? Yes. Suppressors (also called silencers) are fully legal under federal law and Utah state law. They are legal in 42 states total. Utah also allows them for hunting with no extra restrictions.
Do I need a special license or “Class 3” to own a suppressor? No. This is the most common misconception. “Class 3” (SOT) is a dealer classification. Regular buyers do not need any special license or permit. You only need to complete the ATF Form 4 process, pass a background check, and get approved.
How do I buy a suppressor through Rushworxs? You can view a brief overview here
- Choose the suppressor you want (or ask us for recommendations)
- We file the ATF eForm 4 for you
- You provide fingerprints and a photo
- ATF runs the background check
- Once approved, you complete a standard Form 4473 and pick it up
Is there still a $200 tax stamp? No. As of January 1, 2026 the federal tax on suppressors is $0. The Form 4 process is still required, but there is no tax payment.
How long does approval take? eForm 4s are currently moving quickly — often just days to a couple of weeks for individual applications.
Should I buy as an individual or through a trust? There are a lot of resources online that discuss the advantages and disadvantages.
- Individual is simpler and usually faster. Only you can legally possess the suppressor.
- A gun trust allows multiple people (spouse, family, etc.) to possess and use it, and makes inheritance easier. We can help set up and notarize a trust if you want one. We recommend trusts for the most flexibility.
Can I hunt with a suppressor in Utah? Yes. Utah allows suppressors for all legal hunting.
Do suppressors make guns completely silent? No. They significantly reduce the noise (usually 20–35 dB), which is excellent for hearing protection, but the gun still makes sound.
Do you handle other NFA items? Yes. We also transfer SBRs and other NFA items and handle all the paperwork.
